چکیده

Surgery in the cranio-maxillo-facial area is complex. However, planning a surgical operation can help the surgeon in enhancing the quality of the operation. On the other hand, progress in planning seems not to be completely justiied if the planning strategy cannot be replicated during its execution. Problems occur during planning as well as during execution. A system that optimally supports the surgeon should support planning and simulation as well as execution by the surgeon, execution guided by a navigation system and autonomous execution by a robot. In this paper we present our approach for an integrated system for planning and execution of cranio-maxillo-facial surgery operations. This approach is based on a hierarchical architecture and the decomposition of planning levels being either independent or dependent of the execution system via implicit and explicit elementary operations. The architecture of our system can be applied to operations in general. Operation speciic parts of our system have been applied to two speciic operations in the mandible/maxilla region, the LeFort I osteotomy and sagittal dissection of the mandible. Results of simulated and robotized execution of some elementary operations are presented.

An excellent navigation system and experience in craniomaxillofacial navigation surgery: a double-center study

Numerous problems regarding craniomaxillofacial navigation surgery are not well understood. In this study, we performed a double-center clinical study to quantitatively evaluate the characteristics of our navigation system and experience in craniomaxillofacial navigation surgery. Fifty-six patients with craniomaxillofacial disease were included and randomly divided into experimental (using our ...

Haptics-assisted Virtual Planning of Bone, Soft Tissue, and Vessels in Fibula Osteocutaneous Free Flaps

UNLABELLED Virtual surgery planning has proven useful for reconstructing head and neck defects by fibula osteocutaneous free flaps (FOFF). Benefits include improved healing, function, and aesthetics, as well as cost savings. But available virtual surgery planning systems incorporating fibula in craniomaxillofacial reconstruction simulate only bone reconstruction without considering vessels and ...

Published clinical evidence demonstrating accuracy when using Stryker’s navigation systems for neurosurgical, ENT and craniomaxillofacial procedures

Background: Intraoperative navigation is a tool that provides surgeons with real-time, interactive access to their patient’s diagnostic imaging studies while in the operating room. This modality allows for anatomic localization and facilitates intraoperative planning and diagnosis. The application of intraoperative navigation to neurosurgery, otolaryngology, and orthopedic surgery has been well...

Application of Virtual Surgical Planning with Computer Assisted Design and Manufacturing Technology to Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery

Computer aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology today is the standard in manufacturing industry. The application of the CAD/CAM technology, together with the emerging 3D medical images based virtual surgical planning (VSP) technology, to craniomaxillofacial reconstruction has been gaining increasing attention to reconstructive surgeons. This article illustrates the components, syst...
